Heavybit Welcomes New Member: Citus Data
Earlier this week, Heavybit welcomed its newest member company — Citus Data.
Citus Data scales out PostgreSQL, taking relational power further for real-time applications. The CitusDB database offers a unique combination of massive parallelism, real-time reads/writes, and rich PostgreSQL expressiveness including native support for JSON data. The result is an extensible distributed database with an open ecosystem that powers interactive analytics and operational workloads across billions of events.
Based in San Francisco, Citus Data is a Y Combinator alumnus, and is backed by investors that include Data Collective, Bullpen Capital and SV Angel. The CitusDB database is used by enterprises across multiple verticals, including e-commerce, retail, security, ad-tech and mobile analytics, and is available for download from the company’s website at citusdata.com.
Meet the Founders
Umur Cubukcu, CEO and Co-Founder @umurc | LinkedIn
Umur developed new business with world’s leading retailers and consumer goods companies (among them Wal-Mart, Kimberly-Clark, and L’Oreal) and sold enterprise software while at TrueDemand, a demand analytics start-up in California. Before that, Umur worked on numerous projects around the globe with the Boston Consulting Group. Most recently, Umur was the CEO of Mekanist.net, where he helped put the company on a growth path. Umur holds an M.S. in Management Science & Engineering from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Bogazici University.
Ozgun Erdogan, CTO and Co-Founder LinkedIn
Ozgun is one of the co-founders and the CTO at Citus Data. Prior to Citus, Ozgun worked as a software developer for four years in the Distributed Systems Engineering team at Amazon. There, he proposed, designed, and implemented novel algorithms on distributed caching and consistency; and also worked on building systems for scalable data analytics. Ozgun earned his M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University, and his B.S. from Galatasaray University. He also holds patents on distributed cache consistency and load balancing.
Sumedh Pathak, VP of Engineering & Co-Founder @moss_toss | LinkedIn
Sumedh worked as a software development engineer for over five years at Amazon.com. While there, he optimized the fulfillment workflow software for Amazon’s supply chain, and extended the shopping cart application. Sumedh has extensive experience both on distributed data stores such as Dynamo, as well as relational stores such as Oracle; he regularly worked on these systems during his days in the ordering and shopping cart teams. Sumedh earned his M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University, and his B.S. from the University of Minnesota.
Why We’re Excited to Work with Citus Data
The humble relational database has been around for close to 45 years. The power of relational algebra and SQL has meant it remains the developer’s data storage workhorse despite the more recent rise of No-SQL and document-oriented databases. Citus Data gives developers the control, expressiveness and familiarity of a traditional relational database with the ability to distribute it across multiple machines.
Customers can query large volumes of data in near real-time, while keeping the familiar relational semantics and reliability of PostgreSQL. We’re excited to work with the team on bringing their technology to the world.
