This edition of the Dev Tools Digest features developer-based surveys from Iron.io, as well as the Linux Foundation and Dice. Codenvy announces new features and Heavybit welcomes a new member.
Ups and Downs of Microservices
Takipi looks at the “dark side of microservices” with a recent post that explores what can go wrong with microservices in production. Topics include debugging as a key task and the increased importance of centralized monitoring tools including root cause detection.
A post on the Iron.io blog lays out how microservices work and the role they play in speeding up project growth. Statistics from an IDG Connect survey conducted on behalf of Iron.io showed that 10% of the senior IT respondents currently used a microservices architecture, with 27% saying they intended to use microservices in the future, with another 28% planning to do so within the year.
More Demand for Open Source Professionals
The Linux Foundation and Dice have released the 2016 Open Source Jobs Report, and the outlook is good for the open source developer community. The findings show that 59% of HR managers who responded plan to increase open source hires over the next six months, and 79% of them have increased incentives to keep the open source professionals they already have. You can find the full report here.
New Ways to Code: Codenvy and Pantheon
Codenvy announces the Codenvy 4.2.0 release, as part of its next-gen beta, that includes new stacks for C, C++, Python and Android. Developing remotely using SSH is now an option, as is support for Java and GDB debuggers.
Pantheon has a solution for developing its sites locally: Kalabox. The free, open source software allows for projects to be imported along with configuration settings and using out-of-the-box tools including Git and Xdebug. You can read more about using Kalabox with Pantheon here.
