DevGuild: Developer Product Design

Developer products are tough to build. You need to think deeply about how you deploy, configure, scale, support and manage your product, all while delivering an elegant experience.

If you’re a dev company founder or designing a developer tool, join Heavybit on Jul 27th for a half-day event on onboarding, API design and developer experience. Request an invite today!

All Hands on Deck

RainforestQA lays out the benefits of crowdsourced testing for functionality, and it explains how having a large network of first-time users helps you get more fresh eyes on your product (with feedback that better reflects the first-time-user experience) and resolves issues faster thanks to a large and diverse group of testers. Rainforest says it relies on a network of 50,000 crowdsourced testers to perform checks and resolve issues for client companies such as ConsumerAffairs.

Flying the Flags

How can you get the most out of feature branching in development? Read this post from LaunchDarkly to learn more about how your team can collaborate faster and more effectively by combining feature branches with feature flagging. According to the article, it’s a combo that gives developers more control over continuous deployment, with better communication and less hassle when it comes to code reviews and resolving merge conflicts.

Ecosystems in the Cloud

The Cloud Foundry Summit 2016 delivers a talk by Ivan Dwyer, Head of Business Development for Iron.io, a Cloud Foundry Foundation member company. Watch a video of Dwyer’s talk, “Navigating the Cloud Foundry Ecosystem of Ecosystems: An ISV Perspective,” to hear some real world examples of the successes you can have within engineering, marketing, and joint sales efforts.

New From Heavybit

Heavybit hosted the GoSF Meetup in June, an event that showcased projects and developers who use the Go programming language. There were three talks that focused on: building Slack bots in Go, taming dependencies, and the use of OpenTracing. A brief summary with videos are available here.

CircleCI held their monthly Office Hours in the Heavybit Clubhouse. Calvin French-Owen, co-founder of Segment, gave a talk on Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages. A recap and video of “Get AMP’d: An Introduction To Accelerated Mobile Pages” can be found on the Heavybit blog.
